Gender in the Workplace: Difficult Conversations for Men with Peter White AM, CEO FBAA; David Walker, Head of Sales, Lab 49; Dan Poynton, Executive Officer, GippSport.

Peter White AM

Peter White AM is the Managing Director of the FBAA, and first started as a volunteer with the FBAA in 2003.

Peter’s banking and finance career spans over 44 years covering retail banking, Head of Private Banking, Associate Director of Marketing and Distribution in Investment Banking, established RAMS Home Loans first sales office in 1993, and has run mortgage management businesses and has had several broking businesses of his own.

A strong and passionate advocate for industry, Peter spends a significant amount of time with regulators and government, as well as being a Registered Lobbyist in his own right, and is the leading advocate and Ambassador for Mental Health Awareness in our finance industry which he started the awareness conversation in 2016.

In 2016 Peter established and is the current Global Chairman for the IMBF (International Mortgage Brokers Federation) which is a collaboration industry association in 6 countries and is a world’s first of its kind.

He also sits on the Small Business Association of Australia’s Advisory Board, and is a champion and campaigner for mental health issues & the needs of parents and carers of Special Needs Children.

Peter was recognised in the 2019 Queens Birthday Honours with an ‘AM’ Member of the Order of Australia, for significant services to industry and the community.

And, in 2021 was awarded in the Australian Broking Awards as the ‘Industry Thought Leader of the Year’ and in 2022 ‘Wellness Advocated of the Year’ and was recognised in the MPA 2022 Global Top 100 mortgage influences.

David Walker

David leads sales and relationship management for LAB49 across the APAC region.

David’s background has seen him gain insight across 3 broad sectors – Social Sciences, Banking and Technology, having worked for major companies like Royal Bank of Scotland, NAB, Macquarie Group and Tech Mahindra.

David holds a double major honours degree in Sociology & Criminology from Cardiff University. He started his career in Criminology interviewing and counselling violent offenders with drugs and alcohol addiction. This foundation in human behaviour, managing difficult conversations has allowed David to successfully navigate the next 20+ years of his career across Banking and Wealth Management; building real and meaningful relations with some of Europe and Australia’s leading Family Offices and Corporate Executives. Over the years David has added qualifications across Capital Markets, Insurance, Wealth Management and Banking in both the UK and Australia but he still sees his most valuable qualification and attribute by far as the ability to connect genuinely and passionately to understand the other person.

David also enjoys contributing to advisory boards across start up, innovation and diversity and has been involved in various board roles such as Brunswick Business Incubator, Barayamal First Nations Entrepreneurship, Melbourne Innovation Centre’s Food Incubator and West Australia Head of D&I for Macquarie Group

Dan Poynton

Dan Poynton is the EO of GippSport. Dan has an unwavering commitment to gender equality and plays a key role as an ally within GippSport, Gippsland, and more broadly across the Victorian Sport
sector.

Under Dan’s guidance, GippSport has delivered many sector leading initiatives such as:
 The Balancing the Board program, providing Governance training and mentoring to women aspiring to leadership roles in sport
 Gippsland girls in sport forum –where GippSport bought 40 young women (16-18yrs old) together to co-design what a supportive and inclusive sport environment should look like for young women
 The Changing Gippsland’s Game initiative, which supports a network of professional women in sports administration roles.
 In partnership with Latrobe University’s Centre for Sport & Social Impact delivered the ‘Men as allies: supporting women & girls in community sport’ research project

Internally, Dan has actively promoted and empowered women in leadership positions and has facilitated a significant number of development opportunities for women in the GippSport team
including, most recently:
 Successfully nominating and sponsoring one of his team to participate in the Victorian Government’s Joan Kirners Emerging Leaders program
 Sponsored another colleague to be part of the Office for Women in Sport & Recreation’s delegation at the International Working Group World Conference on Women and Sport in New Zealand in November 2022
 Supported a team member to participate in the Office Women in Sport & Recreation’s Next Generation Leaders program in 2023

Collectively, these achievements led to GippSport being recognised in the 2022 Recalibrate Gender Equity Awards winning the Best SME as well as Best Organisation overall.

Gender in the Workplace: Difficult Conversations for Men with Robert Kelly, CEO Steadfast and Matthew Monaghan, CEO Franchise Council

Robert Kelly

Robert co-founded Steadfast and has over 52 years’ experience in the insurance industry. He was voted the second most influential person in insurance by Insurance News,and was awarded the ACORD Rainmaker Award in 2014. Robert is a Qualified Practising Insurance Broker, a Fellow of NIBA, a Senior Associate of ANZIIF, a Certified Insurance Professional and a Graduate member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Robert is the Chairman of the ACORD Board and is also a Director of ASX-listed Johns Lyng Group Limited and not-for-profit organisation KidsXpress.

Robert Kelly co-founded Steadfast in 1996 to provide insurance-related quality advice and service, leading the company to become the largest general insurance broker network and underwriting agency group in Australia and New Zealand and an ASX 100 listed company. Steadfast Group is the largest general insurance broker network and the largest group of insurance underwriting agencies in Australasia, with growing operations in Asia and Europe. He recently received the prestigious award of Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the Queen’s Birthday 2022 Honours List.

Matthew Monaghan

Matthew Monaghan. He is CEO of the Franchise Council of Australia. Despite having taken on the role in May 2023, Matthew is already driving change. Among the key initiatives he has already introduced for Australia’s $174 Billion Franchising Sector is an intensive National Response across the FCA’s members as part of the current Federal Government Review of the Franchising Code.

Matthew brings an impressive reputation for driving transformation in a collaborative way, especially within member organisations to his new role at the FCA.

He has more than 20 years of experience working in senior leadership roles across private, not-for-profit and public sector organisations across multiple sectors including sustainability, medical services, animal welfare, and childcare.

Matthew is a Fellow of both the Governance Institute and the Australian Institute of Management, holds an MBA and recently completed executive studies with Saiid Business School at the University of Oxford on business disruption and digital transformation. He is committed to driving the development of organisational capacity and capability through effective governance, leadership and sustainable business practices.

Clyde Fernandez 

Clyde is the Director of Technology Workflows in A/NZ for ServiceNow. Clyde’s move to ServiceNow in 2023, followed a 20+ year career in Sales leadership and management in the technology industry. He is a people-oriented and passionate about gender equity and its impact on both his clients & team. He leads teams using a philosophy centred on his 3 Cs of Climate, Clarity and Coaching, with a focus on enabling people prepare for the future of work.  These have enabled him to develop good leadership, communication, interpersonal and change management skills to thrive in “Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous” settings, by developing & practicing his adaptability muscle (AQ).

Dan Bognar VP& MD Hubspot JAPAC

Dan Bognar is VP & MD  Hubspot JAPAC . He has a long history in the tech industry working at DocuSign, Salesforce & Oracle to name a few.  He is passionate about giving women a voice is something he is deeply passionate about.
Over his career, this has taken many forms. From mentoring and sponsoring high-potential female talent to creating a safe place for women to work and championing them to raise issues when they have been bullied or harassed, Dan has done it all.

Alfred Chidembo

Alfred Chidembo is the Founder of Aussi Books for Zim. He is a PhD graduate in Materials Engineering from the University of Wollongong the first in his family to achieve this level of education. Upon completing his studies, he set out to collect only 2,000 books to send to Zimbabwe to help children in his village in Mudzi District, Mutoko. Five years later they have set up 9 libraries and shipped over 90 000 books. He is a champion of humanity and loves to make a difference.

John Gualtieri

John Gualtieri is the Chief Executive Officer of Kmart Australia and New Zealand which has more than 325 stores and is recognised as one of the most profitable discount department stores in Australia. John commenced with Kmart Australia in 2008 as Divisional Merchandise Manager for the Home Division and in 2010 was appointed to General Manager of General Merchandise & Store Renewal.

In 2016 was appointed to Chief Operating Officer managing multiple teams across many functions/business units. Has led Planning, Buying Merchandise and Store Renewal teams and has worked with Suppliers and Retailers across Asia, UK and USA.

With the appointment to Chief Executive Officer in 2021, John’s experience, both national and international covers a number of industries and he is a very focussed and proactive Retail Leader driven by the desire to deliver strong results.

John holds a Bachelor of Business Degree with a major in Accounting and minor in Law And has completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Paul Zahra

Paul Zahra is Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Retailers Association. He is also a Non-Executive Director, Board and Company Advisor and one of Australia’s most influential corporate diversity advocates. A leading force in the Australian Retail Industry for over 40 years, Paul represents small to large retailers through the Australian Retailers Association.

Paul’s corporate roles have included Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of David Jones Limited as well as senior leadership roles at Target Australia and Officeworks Superstores. Paul advises Boards and Companies in retail (both traditional and start-ups), leadership, transformational change and diversity.
